J Allen Brack, WoW GOLD ’s Lead Producer, has finally given the answer we’ve all been asking for the last couple of years - Will WoW be getting a graphics update? The problem with at least EQ is that they forced a badly optimized graphics engine into the client. Yes it looked better, but it required a monster system to run (at the time) while the graphics did not warrant such requirements.

If Blizz does it, it should be optimized to run at a reasonable rate (not really a concern considering blizz’s track record on these things).

In an interview with Eurogamer, Brack danced around the question at first, giving examples of where graphic updates haven’t worked in other games like EverQuest and Ultima Online: It’s interesting, two games have really tried that before, WoW GOLD Ultima Online tried it and EverQuest tried it as well, and in each case it was only somewhat successful. In each case a lot of people continued to play with the original client, because it was faster, or they preferred it, or were just used to it or whatever. And so for me as a game developer, the idea that we would spend so much time and energy on something and have people go, “meh, that’s not really for me,” that’s not very exciting.

But then, surprisingly, he went on to say that a successful model has yet to be built, but they were working on it: So I don’t think there’s really a clear model as to how to do that successfully. The model we have with Wrath of the Lich King allows people with high-end machines some additional graphical effects, and then we’ll have some kind of fallback for the people who don’t.

Then Brack just casually dropped this bombshell: Will we need a graphical update from the ground up at some point? Yep, probably. And I’m positive we’ll talk about it next expansion.

The shops will sell out of new pants today, methinks. Well if memory serves folks right when WoW first came out in reviews, player comments and so on was the game was very polished, played very nicely, etc, etc. but there was almost always a comment about its cartoonish looks. While some folks complimented on it the look was never wholly embraced and there was a undercurrent of the look was dated when it came out. WoW GOLD So yes the look of the game needs updating. Remember that the game was years in development before it came on and the graphics engine was behind when they released it and the content was all released then.

As for a flying mount in old world. Its been said elsewhere it’ll never happen. Blizz will not want access to many areas by such a mount there plus they don’t want level 80’s ganking level 1’s. I think at some point Blizz will introduce teleport stones like they did with Everquest when areas got so large it became a necessity.
